Redgrave Theatre

About

The Redgrave Theatre in Clifton, Bristol, is a much‑loved venue with a unique history and an enduring role in the city’s cultural life. Originally opened in 1966 as the Clifton College Theatre, it was the first purpose‑built school theatre in the country, designed with a traditional proscenium arch inspired by London’s Mermaid Theatre. The building was officially opened by actor Sir Michael Redgrave, an alumnus of the college, and renamed in his honour after his death in 1985. With a capacity of just over 300, the auditorium combines intimacy with a sense of scale, making it a popular stage for both professional touring productions and community performances. Over the decades it has hosted everything from drama and comedy to music, dance, and film, while continuing to support amateur dramatics groups that have been part of its story since the 1970s. Today, the Redgrave Theatre remains a thriving part of Bristol’s arts scene, blending heritage with a diverse programme that appeals to audiences of all ages.
