Red Lodge Museum

About

The Red Lodge Museum in Bristol is a hidden gem that spans more than four centuries of history behind its striking red door on Park Row. Originally built in 1580 for Sir John Young as an Elizabethan lodge to his Great House, it was designed for entertaining guests amid formal gardens and orchards. The highlight of the building is the Great Oak Room, the last complete Elizabethan room in Bristol, with intricate wood panelling, ornate plasterwork, and a grand stone fireplace that evoke the splendour of the Tudor age. In the 1730s, the lodge was expanded with Georgian additions, creating a fascinating contrast between architectural styles. Later, in 1854, social reformer Mary Carpenter transformed the house into the first girls’ reform school in the country, marking a new chapter in its story. Today, visitors can explore its period rooms, admire the restored Elizabethan Knot Garden, and reflect on the many lives and purposes the building has served. Free to enter, the Red Lodge Museum offers an intimate and atmospheric journey through Bristol’s layered past.
