About

The Heunensäule in Mainz is a monumental sandstone column that silently narrates over a millennium of history. Standing tall in the heart of the city’s market square, this red sandstone monolith was originally quarried in the 11th century near Miltenberg. It was intended for the reconstruction of Mainz Cathedral after a devastating fire in 1009, but the column was never used in the final design. Instead, it remained dormant for centuries until it was gifted to Mainz by the city of Miltenberg in 1975 to commemorate the cathedral’s 1000th anniversary. The Heunensäule now rises like an ancient obelisk, evoking comparisons to Roman and Egyptian monuments. It serves not only as a striking visual landmark but also as a symbol of Mainz’s enduring civic and spiritual legacy. Bronze reliefs at its base recount episodes from the city’s past, making it both a sculptural centerpiece and a storytelling pillar. For visitors, it offers a moment of reflection amid the bustle of the market, anchoring the present in the deep roots of the past.

Heunensäule is located on Liebfrauenplatz, right at the center of Mainz’s Old Town and directly in front of Mainz Cathedral, making it a highly visible landmark on the historic market square. This monumental 16-ton sandstone column with bronze reliefs is surrounded by the city’s most notable attractions, including Mainz Cathedral, the bustling Marktplatz, the Heilig-Geist-Spital, and the renowned Gutenberg Museum, all within easy walking distance. The area is a hub of activity during market days and city events such as the Christmas market, and also features numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops, offering a vibrant setting for photography, sightseeing, and enjoying Mainz’s rich heritage.​
