Eltzer Hof is a baroque landmark in Mainz, built in 1742 and remembered both for its aristocratic past and its later role as a cultural venue. Commissioned by the Counts of Eltz, the three‑storey palace in Bauhofstraße was designed with a restrained elegance unusual for its time, featuring rusticated pilasters, a mansard roof, and two ornate portals. In the 18th century, it became a center of hospitality and social life, frequented by Mainz’s prince‑electors and notable guests including Goethe. The building later evolved into a music venue, but suffered heavy damage during the bombing of Mainz in 1942. Despite destruction, its façade and adjoining structures remain listed as cultural monuments, forming part of a protected zone in the Altstadt. Today, Eltzer Hof has been revitalized through restoration and adaptive reuse, blending historic architecture with modern functions. This three-story Baroque building, constructed in 1742 for the Eltz dynasty, is noted for its rusticated pilaster strips, mansard hipped roof, and two ornate Baroque portals. It is a listed cultural monument and forms part of a monument zone together with adjacent buildings. Nearby are important cultural sites such as the Landesmuseum Mainz, St. Peter's Church, and Ernst-Ludwig-Platz. The historic Golden Ross Barracks are also close by. The building, which suffered damage during World War II and has undergone renovations, is currently being transformed to include apartments, offices, and retail spaces, while preserving its historic facades.
