The Garnisonsmuseum Mainz is a compact yet richly curated museum dedicated to the city’s military history, housed in the historic casemates of the Mainz Citadel. Founded in 2007, the museum evolved from the earlier “Garnisonshistorisches Magazin” and now presents over 5,000 artifacts across four vaulted cellar rooms. Its collection includes uniforms, photographs, documents, medals, and memorabilia spanning from 1792 to the post-WWI French occupation. A standout feature is the detailed scale model of the Mainz fortress, offering insight into the city’s strategic role over centuries. Curated by Wolfgang Balzer, the museum is run by volunteers and supported by a local association. Visits are available by appointment and often coincide with events like the Zitadellenfest. The museum’s intimate setting and personal curation make it a unique space for exploring Mainz’s military and civic past through tangible history.
