Fastnachtsbrunnen is Mainz’s exuberant tribute to its beloved Carnival tradition, standing proudly in Schillerplatz since 1967. This nine-meter-high fountain bursts with over 200 bronze figures, each representing characters from folklore, mythology, and the city’s festive spirit. Designed by sculptor Blasius Spreng and architect Helmut Gräf, it features iconic personalities like Till Eulenspiegel, Father Rhine, and Hanswurst, alongside symbols of Mainz’s cherished trio: Weck, Worscht und Woi (rolls, sausage, and wine). The fountain was commissioned to embody the joy and satire of the fifth season—Fastnacht—which has shaped Mainz’s identity for centuries. Every November 11th, the Carnival season is ceremoniously launched from the nearby Osteiner Hof, with the fountain serving as a lively backdrop. More than a monument, Fastnachtsbrunnen is a celebration cast in bronze, capturing the humor, resilience, and cultural pride of the people of Mainz.
