The Alexanderturm is a rare medieval tower in Mainz, built around 1500 atop Roman foundations dating back to the 4th century. Located on the grounds of the Kupferberg Sektkellerei in the Oberstadt district, the tower marks a historic bend in the ancient city wall where Roman and medieval fortifications once converged. Though not publicly accessible, the Alexanderturm remains one of three surviving towers from Mainz’s former city defenses, alongside the Holzturm and Eisenturm. Its cylindrical form and strategic placement reflect its original role as a watchtower guarding the western flank of Mogontiacum, the Roman precursor to Mainz. The site’s layered history—from Roman castrum to medieval stronghold—embodies the city’s enduring legacy as a crossroads of military, civic, and architectural evolution.
