Mainz Cathedral, also known as St. Martin’s Cathedral, is a monumental symbol of spiritual and political power in the heart of Mainz. Founded in 975 by Archbishop Willigis and inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the cathedral has stood for over a millennium as the seat of the Bishop of Mainz. Though the original structure was destroyed by fire on its consecration day in 1009, it was swiftly rebuilt and expanded over centuries. The result is a striking blend of Romanesque foundations, Gothic chapels, and Baroque elements, reflecting the evolving architectural styles of the Holy Roman Empire. The cathedral’s red sandstone façade dominates the city’s skyline, while its interior houses the tombs of powerful prince-archbishops and a rich collection of religious art. As the site of seven royal coronations, Mainz Cathedral played a pivotal role in German imperial history.
