It offers a year-round glimpse into the “fifth season,” with colorful exhibits that include costumes, medals, parade memorabilia, and the iconic Schwellköpp—oversized papier-mâché heads used in carnival processions. Visitors can explore the evolution of Fastnacht from its organized beginnings in 1837 to its televised spectacles like “Mainz bleibt Mainz, wie es singt und lacht.” Highlights include the horn-rimmed glasses of satirist Rolf Braun, Ernst Neger’s leather apron, and costumes worn by beloved performers such as Margit Sponheimer.
