The Holzturm in Mainz is a striking medieval landmark that once guarded the city’s Rhine-facing fortifications. Dating back to the 14th century, the Holzturm—literally “Wood Tower”—was named for the timber once stored nearby along the riverbank. Originally part of Mainz’s defensive wall, it served as a gate tower and later as a prison. Its slender Gothic silhouette, complete with lancet arched windows and sculpted reliefs, reflects renovations from the early 15th century. The tower was heavily damaged during World War II but was meticulously reconstructed in 1961 to mark Mainz’s 2000th anniversary. Today, it houses cultural organizations and retains its historic charm, linking the old city center with the former fishing village of Selenhofen.
