The Landesmuseum Mainz is one of Germany’s oldest and most comprehensive museums of cultural history, tracing the evolution of art and society from prehistory to the 21st century. Located in the heart of Mainz on Große Bleiche, the museum occupies the former electoral stables—now a striking blend of Baroque architecture and modern glass structures. Its origins date back to 1803, when Napoleon and his minister Chaptal gifted a collection of paintings to the city. Over time, the museum expanded into a vast repository of regional and European heritage. Highlights include prehistoric artifacts, Roman sculptures, medieval religious art, Baroque masterpieces, and modern works by Picasso and Slevogt. The museum also houses a notable Judaica collection and graphic art spanning five centuries.
