The Eisenturm (Iron Tower) is located in Mainz between the current town hall, Rheinstraße—the city’s main traffic artery—and the Am Brand shopping center, near the Rhine River. This medieval structure was originally built around 1240 as part of the city’s extensive fortifications, serving as a watchtower and city gate. The tower gets its name from the Iron Market (Eisenmarkt) that was held nearby until the 19th century. Over time, it was raised to six stories in the 15th century and later served varied functions including as a military prison and artists' studio. Badly damaged in World War II, it was restored in the 1960s and now houses the Kunstverein Eisenturm Mainz, an art association that hosts contemporary art exhibitions. Its historic Romanesque gateway with lion carvings remains a remarkable feature, and the tower is one of the few surviving elements of Mainz’s medieval city walls, reflecting the city’s historic heritage in a vibrant urban setting.
