Grote of Sint‑Laurenskerk is Rotterdam’s most important historic monument and the only surviving medieval building in the city centre. Built between 1449 and 1525, the late‑Gothic church once stood at the heart of the old town and remains a powerful symbol of resilience. Although heavily damaged during the 1940 bombing, its walls and tower endured, allowing the church to be restored as a landmark of Rotterdam’s post‑war reconstruction. Inside, visitors find soaring vaults, memorials, and a permanent exhibition that traces the building’s turbulent history. Surrounded today by modern architecture, the Laurenskerk offers a striking contrast between past and present, serving as both a cultural venue and a quiet place of reflection in the vibrant city.
