Kasteel van Hillegersberg is one of the oldest historic sites in Rotterdam, today preserved as a quiet, atmospheric ruin in the heart of Hillegersberg. Known also as Huis ten Berghe, the structure dates back to the 13th century and originally stood as a brick residential tower built on a raised sand mound beside the early church of the village. Though once fortified with a moat and defensive walls, the castle was destroyed in 1426 during the conflicts involving Jacoba van Beieren, leaving only fragments of the tower standing. Over the centuries, the ruin became a romantic symbol of the past, and from the late nineteenth century onward, prominent families placed their burial vaults around it. Set within the cemetery of the Hillegondakerk, the remains of Kasteel van Hillegersberg offer a rare glimpse into medieval Rotterdam and form a peaceful, evocative landmark surrounded by trees and local history.

Kasteel van Hillegersberg (also known as Huis ten Berghe or Kasteel Hilligersberg) is located at Kerkstraat 43, 3054 GS Rotterdam, within the grounds of the Hillegondakerk cemetery in the affluent Hillegersberg neighbourhood north of the city centre. These 13th-century castle ruins feature a stone residential tower on an artificial motte, destroyed in 1426 and preserved under cemetery soil, accessible respectfully via the cemetery entrance away from services. Nearby points of interest include Hillegondakerk church next door, the scenic Bergse Plassen lakes and parks ideal for walking, bridges like Hilleniusbrug and Dorpsstraatbrug, the historic former town hall on Looslaan now a wedding venue, and easy tram access via lines 4 and 8 to Rotterdam Centraal, with the green residential area offering cafes and upscale villas.
