Museum of Byzantine Civilization

About

Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki is one of Greece’s most elegant and scholarly museums, dedicated to the art, faith, and daily life of the Byzantine world. Opened in 1994, it quickly became a reference point for Byzantine studies thanks to its refined architecture and exceptional collections drawn from Thessaloniki’s long history as a major imperial city. Inside, visitors move through atmospheric galleries that reveal how Byzantines lived, worshipped, and created. The museum’s icons—some shimmering with gold leaf—form the heart of the collection, illustrating the evolution of sacred imagery from early Christianity to the late empire. The section on Byzantine mosaics showcases fragments from churches across the city, their glass tesserae still glowing with remarkable intensity. Equally captivating are the exhibits on everyday life: ceramics, jewellery, textiles, and tools that show the sophistication of Byzantine craftsmanship. The gallery dedicated to funerary art presents marble sarcophagi and painted tomb panels, offering insight into beliefs about death and resurrection.
