Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki is one of the city’s most versatile cultural institutions, dedicated to showcasing Greek art from the 19th century to today. Housed in the elegant Villa Bianca and additional exhibition spaces across the city, the gallery blends historical charm with contemporary creativity, offering visitors a broad, engaging view of Thessaloniki’s artistic identity. Inside, the permanent collection highlights major Greek painters, sculptors, and printmakers, tracing the evolution of national art through realism, symbolism, and modernism. Works by key figures of the Thessaloniki School reveal how local artists shaped a distinct regional style. The gallery also preserves rare engravings, icons, and early watercolours that illuminate the city’s cultural past. Temporary exhibitions are a major strength. They often explore photography, installation art, and experimental media, bringing contemporary voices into dialogue with tradition. A dedicated section focuses on modern Greek sculpture, presenting expressive forms that reflect social change and artistic innovation.
Thessaloniki Greece
The Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki is spread over a couple of beautiful historic villas, but its main central location is very easy to reach. The address is 162 Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, Thessaloniki 546 46, Greece, in the famous Villa Mordoch. It's located on the elegant Vasilissis Olgas street in the eastern part of the city center, an area known for its old mansions and quiet, green streets. Another part of the gallery is housed in Casa Bianca at 180 Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, just a short walk away. Because you are on this lovely avenue, you are close to many sights. A walk towards the sea brings you to the waterfront promenade and the famous White Tower of Thessaloniki. Very close by you also have the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia-Thrace and Villa Allatini, both in stunning old buildings. If you head towards the center you will reach the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Museum of Byzantine Culture, and further on Aristotelous Square, the Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda. The whole area is perfect for a relaxed walk, mixing art, historic villas and cafes along the way.
