Arch of Galerius

About

The Arch of Galerius—known locally as the Kamara—is one of Thessaloniki’s most iconic Roman monuments. Built around 305 CE, it celebrated Emperor Galerius’ victory over the Persians and formed part of a grand ceremonial route linking his palace complex with the Rotunda. What survives today is only a portion of the original eight‑pillar structure, yet its reliefs remain among the most detailed Roman carvings in Greece. The most fascinating feature is the narrative sculpting on the surviving pillars. These marble panels depict battle scenes, imperial ceremonies, and symbolic animals, offering a vivid visual chronicle of Galerius’ campaign. Look closely and you’ll spot intricate details: soldiers in motion, exotic Persian attire, and even architectural backgrounds carved with surprising depth. Although the arch is an outdoor monument, visitors can “read” it like an open-air museum. Walking around the pillars reveals different layers of Roman propaganda and artistry. The connection to the nearby Rotunda adds context—this was once the heart of a vast imperial complex. Today, the arch stands at a lively crossroads where ancient Rome meets modern Thessaloniki.

Location

The Arch of Galerius, often called Kamara by locals, stands right in the heart of Thessaloniki at the busy meeting point of Egnatia Street and Dimitriou Gounari Street. A simple address that works is Egnatia 144, Thessaloniki 546 22. Built around the early 300s to celebrate Emperor Galerius’s victory over the Persians, it once formed part of a grand processional route linking his palace to the big circular Rotunda nearby. Today the carved marble reliefs still catch the eye as people walk underneath, and it sits open to the street day and night with no ticket needed. Just a couple of minutes’ walk brings you to the Rotunda of Galerius itself, that huge domed building that has been temple, church and mosque over the centuries. A short stroll south leads to the remains of the Palace of Galerius around Navarinou Square, where you can still see bits of the old imperial complex among the cafés. From here it’s an easy wander to the Roman Forum a bit farther west, or down toward the White Tower on the waterfront. Nearby you can also reach the Church of Agios Dimitrios, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, and the Atatürk Museum. The whole area feels lively and central, so you can link the arch with these other spots without any real effort and still have time for a coffee nearby.
