Church of the Holy Apostles

About

The Church of the Holy Apostles is one of Thessaloniki’s most exquisite late Byzantine monuments, built in the early 14th century at the height of the Palaiologan artistic revival. Originally part of a monastery, it showcases the era’s love for intricate brickwork, ceramic inlays, and elegant architectural rhythms. Its exterior is a masterpiece of patterned masonry, with alternating bands of brick and stone forming decorative arches and blind niches. A fascinating detail is the church’s complex design: a cross‑in‑square core surrounded by chapels and a narthex, crowned by four smaller domes around the central one. This creates a dynamic silhouette rarely seen in the city. During the Ottoman period, it was converted into a mosque, and the base of a former minaret still stands as a quiet reminder of Thessaloniki’s layered history. Inside, the church preserves some of the finest Palaiologan frescoes in the region. These paintings, with their deep colours, expressive faces, and refined modelling, reflect the spiritual intensity of late Byzantine art. The sanctuary’s marble revetments, carved capitals, and the interplay of light beneath the domes create a serene, contemplative atmosphere.
