The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour (Metamorfosi tou Sotiros) is a small yet captivating Byzantine monument tucked into the winding streets of Ano Poli. Built in the early 14th century, it reflects the refined elegance of the Palaiologan period, when Thessaloniki flourished as a centre of art and theology. Its compact cross‑in‑square plan and carefully patterned brickwork make it one of the neighbourhood’s architectural gems. A particularly interesting fact is that the church survived the 1917 fire that devastated much of the city. Its hillside position protected it, allowing its original structure to remain largely intact. During the Ottoman era it was converted into a mosque, but unlike many other churches, it retained much of its Byzantine character. Inside, visitors will find a serene, intimate space shaped by four columns supporting the dome. Though only fragments of the original frescoes survive, they reveal the delicate style of late Byzantine painting—soft faces, deep colours, and expressive gestures. The sanctuary’s marble elements and carved capitals add to the church’s quiet beauty.
