Church of Acheiropoietos

About

The Church of Acheiropoietos is one of Thessaloniki’s oldest surviving Christian basilicas, dating to the 5th century. Its name means “Not Made by Human Hands,” referring to a revered icon once kept here. The building is a rare example of an early Byzantine three‑aisled basilica that has remained largely intact despite earthquakes, fires, and centuries of urban change. One of its most interesting features is the extensive use of spolia—reused ancient marble columns and capitals taken from earlier Roman buildings. This creates a striking interior rhythm, with mismatched yet harmonious elements that reveal the city’s layered history. The church also preserves fragments of original mosaics and frescoes, including delicate floral motifs and geometric patterns typical of early Christian decoration. Inside, visitors can admire the high clerestory windows that fill the nave with soft, diffused light. The marble pavement, carved architraves, and the elegant colonnades give a sense of the grandeur of Thessaloniki’s early Christian era. During the Ottoman period, the church was converted into a mosque, but its architectural core remained untouched, allowing modern visitors to experience its original spatial beauty.
