Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki

About

Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki preserves the memory of one of the most influential Jewish communities in Europe, a community that shaped the city for centuries. Housed in a restored 1904 building on Agiou Mina Street, the museum stands near the heart of the former Jewish quarter, offering a moving journey through Sephardic life, culture, and loss. Inside, visitors encounter rare photographs, documents, and personal belongings that trace the story of Thessaloniki’s Jews from their arrival after the 1492 expulsion from Spain to their flourishing as a majority population in the city. The exhibits on Sephardic daily life reveal traditions, professions, and community institutions that made Thessaloniki known as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans.” A central part of the museum is dedicated to the destruction of the community during the Holocaust. Archival material, survivor testimonies, and objects recovered from deported families offer a solemn, powerful narrative of loss. The section on Jewish cemeteries highlights the fate of one of Europe’s largest burial grounds, once home to over 300,000 graves.
