Thessaloniki Cinema Museum & Cinematheque is one of the city’s most engaging cultural spaces, celebrating Greece’s cinematic heritage while highlighting Thessaloniki’s long relationship with film. Located at the port, the museum occupies a former warehouse whose minimalist interior contrasts beautifully with the rich visual history on display. Inside, visitors follow a chronological journey through Greek cinema. Early cameras, projectors, and editing equipment illustrate how filmmaking developed from the silent era to modern productions. The museum’s collection of Greek film posters is especially captivating, showcasing bold graphic styles and iconic stars who shaped national cinema. Archival photographs and scripts offer insight into the creative process behind landmark films. A highlight is the section dedicated to Thessaloniki’s own cinematic identity. Exhibits explore the city’s role as host of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, one of the most influential cultural events in Southeast Europe. Visitors can see festival memorabilia, jury notes, and rare footage from past editions. The Cinematheque, housed within the same complex, screens classic films, retrospectives, and curated thematic programs, making the museum a living hub for cinephiles.
Thessaloniki Greece
The Thessaloniki Cinema Museum and Cinematheque is in one of the coolest parts of the city, right in the old port area that has been turned into a cultural hub. The address is Warehouse A, Port of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki 546 27, Greece. It's located inside the first pier of the port, a few minutes walk from Aristotelous Square and the city center. The whole port area is full of converted warehouses that now hold museums, cinemas and cafes, so it's a very lively and creative place to hang out. Around the museum there is a lot to see without going far. In the same port complex you have the MOMus Photography Museum and the MOMus Experimental Center for the Arts, plus the Thessaloniki Film Festival venues. Just outside the port you are very close to Aristotelous Square, the waterfront promenade and the famous White Tower of Thessaloniki. A short walk inland brings you to Ladadika, the old historic district with its colorful buildings, restaurants and bars, and to the Roman Agora and Church of Agios Dimitrios. It's a perfect spot to combine a museum visit with a walk along the sea, some good food and a bit of the city's modern cultural life.
