White Tower of Thessaloniki

About

White Tower of Thessaloniki is the city’s most iconic symbol, rising at the waterfront where the old sea walls once met the harbour. Built in the 15th century during Ottoman rule, it served as a fort, garrison, and later a prison—earning the grim nickname “Tower of Blood.” Its current bright façade dates from 1890, when it was whitewashed as a gesture of renewal, giving the monument the name it carries today. Inside, the tower hosts a thoughtful museum dedicated to Thessaloniki’s urban history. Visitors ascend through circular chambers that explore the city’s past: Roman splendour, Byzantine devotion, Ottoman multiculturalism, and the modern era. Multimedia displays, models, and artefacts reveal how Thessaloniki evolved into a crossroads of cultures. The section on Ottoman Thessaloniki is especially engaging, showing how the city’s diverse communities shaped its identity. As you climb, narrow windows offer glimpses of the sea and the bustling promenade. At the top, an open terrace provides one of the best panoramas in the city—sweeping views of the Thermaic Gulf, Mount Olympus on clear days, and the lively waterfront below.

Location

The White Tower of Thessaloniki is probably the most famous landmark in the city and it's right on the waterfront, so you really can't miss it. The address is Leoforos Nikis, Thessaloniki 546 21, Greece. It stands on the seafront promenade, at the edge of the city center, overlooking the Thermaic Gulf. It's a very central and lively area, full of people walking, cafes and street musicians, especially in the evening. Around the tower there is a lot to see within a short walk. Right behind it you have the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Museum of Byzantine Culture, both just a few minutes away. Along the promenade you can stroll towards Aristotelous Square, the main square of the city with lots of shops and restaurants. If you head a bit inland, you will find the Arch and Palace of Galerius, the Rotunda, and many beautiful Byzantine churches like Hagia Sophia. The White Tower itself now works as a museum, so you can go inside, climb to the top for a great view of the sea and the city, and then just continue your walk along the coast.
