Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

About

Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is one of Greece’s most important cultural institutions, offering a vivid journey through the history of Macedonia from prehistory to late antiquity. Its modern building, opened in 1962, houses treasures from across the region, many uncovered during major excavations around Thessaloniki and the wider Macedonian plain. Inside, visitors can explore masterpieces such as the gold wreaths and finely crafted jewellery from ancient Macedonian tombs, displayed in the Macedonian Treasures gallery. The museum also presents impressive sculptures, including monumental statues from the city’s Roman period, which reveal Thessaloniki’s role as a thriving imperial centre. One of the most fascinating sections focuses on prehistoric Macedonia, showcasing tools, pottery, and figurines that trace early human settlement. The exhibition on daily life in antiquity offers a close look at domestic objects, trade goods, and religious artefacts, painting a detailed picture of how ancient Macedonians lived. A highlight is the Derveni Krater, an extraordinary bronze vessel decorated with mythological scenes, considered one of the finest examples of classical metalwork.
