Volkspark Humboldthain in Berlin’s Gesundbrunnen district is a historic green space that blends nature, memory, and urban resilience. Established between 1869 and 1876 to honor naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, the park was designed by Gustav Meyer and later reshaped after WWII. Its most iconic feature is the Humboldthöhe, a hill formed from war rubble that conceals a partially demolished flak tower—now a popular climbing wall and bat sanctuary. Guided tours by Berliner Unterwelten offer access to the bunker’s interior during summer months. The park also includes a rose garden inspired by Italian Renaissance design, a water garden with meandering streams, and the Sommerbad Humboldthain, a public pool with slides and diving boards. A vineyard produces limited quantities of local wine, while playgrounds and adventure areas cater to families. With panoramic views, historical remnants, and tranquil retreats, Volkspark Humboldthain stands as a testament to Berlin’s layered past and its creative adaptation of post-war landscapes into vibrant public spaces.

Volkspark Humboldthain is a historic urban park located in Berlin's Gesundbrunnen district, in the northern part of the Mitte borough. The main entrances are near Brunnenstraße and Gustav-Meyer-Allee, directly opposite the S+U Gesundbrunnen station, making access by U- and S-Bahn exceptionally convenient. Designed in the late 19th century, Humboldthain blends wide lawns, wooded hills, and a famous rose garden with historical remnants from World War II, notably the massive Flak Tower. The Flakturm provides one of Berlin’s best panoramic views and is home to climbing walls and guided underground tours by Berliner Unterwelten in summer. Recreational opportunities include walking and jogging trails, playgrounds, and—in summer—the open-air Sommerbad Humboldthain swimming pool, while in winter the park’s hills offer toboggan runs. Just beyond the park’s boundaries are Gesundbrunnen Center with its shops and cafés, the Berlin Underworlds Museum, and the lively Wedding and Prenzlauer Berg neighborhoods, ensuring plenty to discover nearby.
