Berlin’s Botanischer Garten in Steglitz-Zehlendorf is one of the world’s largest and most diverse botanical gardens, spanning 43 hectares and showcasing over 20,000 plant species. Designed by Adolf Engler and Alfred Koerner between 1897 and 1910, the garden was envisioned as “the world in a garden,” with landscapes organized by geographic origin. Highlights include the Great Tropical Greenhouse, the Victoriahaus with its giant water lilies, and the Arboretum featuring woody plants and roses. The attached Botanical Museum—currently under renovation until 2025—is the only one of its kind in Central Europe and houses over 3.5 million preserved specimens. Seasonal trails, themed gardens, and events like Tropical Nights and the Perennials Market offer year-round appeal. As part of the Free University of Berlin, the garden also serves as a hub for botanical research and education. Its blend of scientific heritage, architectural beauty, and ecological diversity makes it a vital cultural and natural landmark in Berlin.

Botanischer Garten Berlin is located in the leafy Dahlem district, with main entrances at Königin-Luise-Straße 6–8 (14195 Berlin) and Unter den Eichen 5–10 (12203 Berlin). Easily reached by S1 (Botanischer Garten station, 10 minutes’ walk) or buses X83, 101, and M48, it offers 43 hectares of beautifully landscaped grounds featuring over 20,000 plant species, themed gardens, and a historic Tropical Greenhouse rising 25 meters high—one of the largest in the world. The adjacent Botanical Museum is accessible from the Königin-Luise-Straße entrance and is the only museum of its kind in Europe, with botanical models, plant artifacts, and historical collections. Just a stroll from the gardens, the picturesque neighborhood of Steglitz and the tranquil Fichtenberg hill invite exploration, while the open spaces of Grunewald forest and Domäne Dahlem, Berlin’s urban farm and food museum, are also nearby. The area is well-connected and ideal for combining scientific curiosity, nature, and cultural excursions in southwest Berlin.
