Brücke Museum

Brücke Museum
About

The Brücke Museum in Berlin is a singular institution dedicated to the Expressionist artists' group "Die Brücke" (The Bridge), formed in Dresden in 1905, which profoundly impacted early 20th-century German art. Established in 1967 through the initiative of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, a founding member, the museum boasts the world's most extensive collection of their works. Schmidt-Rottluff's generous donation of his art to the city of Berlin formed the initial core, later augmented by contributions from other key members like Erich Heckel and their associates. The "Brücke" artists, including prominent figures such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Fritz Bleyl, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, and Otto Mueller, aimed to forge a novel, direct mode of artistic expression. They sought to break free from conventional academic painting, embracing bold, often clashing colors, distorted forms, and raw, emotive lines. Their work conveyed inner feelings and a direct response to modern life, drawing inspiration from figures like Van Gogh and Munch, as well as from "primitivism" and traditional German woodcuts.
