Volkspark Friedrichshain, Berlin’s oldest public park, offers a rich blend of history, leisure, and cultural memory. Established in 1848 to mark the centennial of Frederick the Great’s ascension, it spans 52 hectares between the Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg districts. The park features the Märchenbrunnen, a neo-Baroque fountain adorned with over 100 fairy tale sculptures, and two artificial hills—Mont Klamott and Kleiner Bunkerberg—formed from WWII rubble. Memorials throughout the park commemorate events such as the March Revolution of 1848, the Spanish Civil War, and anti-fascist resistance. A Japanese Peace Bell, gifted in 1989, symbolizes unity against nuclear war. Today, Volkspark Friedrichshain is a vibrant space for locals and visitors alike, offering playgrounds, sports facilities, open-air cinema, and tranquil paths for walking and cycling. A highlight is the Märchenbrunnen (Fountain of Fairy Tales), adorned with over 100 stone sculptures depicting beloved German fairy tales.
