First opened in 1869, the neo-Gothic iron structure quickly became a symbol of the city’s modern spirit. Destroyed during the final days of World War II, it was rebuilt in 1946 and has since undergone several renovations, the most recent in 1993, ensuring its continued role as both a functional crossing and a cultural icon. Stretching 174 meters, the bridge offers some of the best panoramic views of Frankfurt’s skyline, the riverbanks, and the Museumsufer, making it a favorite spot for photographers and visitors alike. Over the decades, it has also become a place of romance, with countless couples attaching love locks to its railings as a sign of devotion. Artists such as Max Beckmann and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner once captured its silhouette in their works, further cementing its place in cultural history. Today, more than 10,000 people cross the Eiserner Steg daily, experiencing not only a practical connection between neighborhoods but also one of Frankfurt’s most atmospheric vantage points, where history, architecture, and city life converge.
Frankfurt am Main Germany
The Eiserner Steg is a historic iron footbridge located in Frankfurt am Main, spanning the river Main. It connects the city centre near the famous Römerberg square and the old town with the district of Sachsenhausen on the southern bank. The 170-meter-long bridge, originally built in 1868 and rebuilt after World War II, provides spectacular views of Frankfurt’s skyline and the Museumsufer. Nearby on the city centre side is the landing stage for excursion boats along the Main, while the Sachsenhäuser Ufer offers riverside promenades, cafés, and restaurants. It is also close to key landmarks such as the Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom), St. Paul’s Church (Paulskirche), and the bustling historic market square. The bridge is well served by public transport, with Römer station nearby, making it a popular and accessible attraction for visitors.
