Hauptwache

About

Built between 1729 and 1731, the Hauptwache originally served as the main guardhouse of the Free City of Frankfurt, complete with guardrooms and prison cells. Its name, meaning “Main Guardroom,” later came to define the entire square around it, which remains one of the busiest meeting points in the city. The building survived centuries of change, was heavily damaged during World War II, and rebuilt in 1954, preserving its distinctive Baroque façade. Since 1905, it has housed a café, making it both a historic monument and a social gathering place. Today, the Hauptwache square is surrounded by shopping streets such as the Zeil, cultural landmarks, and major transport connections, making it a gateway between Frankfurt’s historic Altstadt and its modern city center. With its layered history, architectural charm, and lively atmosphere, the Hauptwache embodies the spirit of Frankfurt as a city where tradition and modernity meet seamlessly.
