St. Paul’s Church (Paulskirche) in Frankfurt am Main is one of Germany’s most important symbols of democracy. Built between 1789 and 1833 in red sandstone, the elliptical neoclassical building was originally the city’s main Protestant church. Its true historical significance came in 1848, when it hosted the Frankfurt National Assembly, the first freely elected German parliament, which drafted the country’s first democratic constitution. Though heavily damaged during World War II, the church was rebuilt soon after and reopened in 1948 as a national memorial. Today, it no longer serves as a place of worship but as a venue for exhibitions, lectures, and ceremonies, including the prestigious Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Inside, visitors can explore the circular hall and the striking mural “The Path of the Representatives to St. Paul’s Church,” which commemorates the events of 1848. Standing at the heart of Frankfurt’s old town, St. Paul’s Church is both a historic landmark and a living reminder of Germany’s democratic heritage.

St. Paul’s Church is located at Paulskirche, Paulsplatz 11 in the city center of Frankfurt am Main, near the historic Römerberg square. This neoclassical elliptical building, completed in 1833, served as Frankfurt’s main Protestant-Lutheran church and gained national significance as the meeting place of the Frankfurt National Assembly from 1848 to 1849, where the first German constitution was drafted. Destroyed during World War II bombing, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1948 as a symbol of democracy and freedom in Germany. Today, it is no longer a church but serves as an exhibition, memorial, and venue for important events such as the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade awarded annually during the Frankfurt Book Fair. Nearby are the Römer city hall complex, Almshouses, and the bustling old town square, making it a central historic and cultural landmark accessible on foot from key city attractions and transport hubs.​
