The Palace of the Prince‑Bishops dominates Liège’s historic centre with its grand courtyards and imposing façades, reflecting nearly a millennium of political and architectural evolution. Originally built around the year 1000 as the residence of Bishop Notger, the complex was repeatedly destroyed by fire and rebuilt, with its most defining transformation taking place in the 16th century under Prince‑Bishop Érard de La Marck. His Renaissance‑inspired redesign gave the palace its distinctive arcaded courtyard and monumental scale, often cited as one of the most impressive civil Gothic structures in Europe.
