Church Saint‑Jacques

About

Church Saint‑Jacques is one of Liège’s most exquisite Gothic landmarks, a masterpiece shaped by nearly five centuries of religious and artistic history. Founded in 1015 as part of a Benedictine abbey, the church was rebuilt in the 16th century in the flamboyant Gothic style, giving it its striking stone tracery, richly painted vaults, and elegant proportions. The preserved 12th‑century Romanesque west front adds a rare architectural contrast, while the Renaissance portal introduced in 1558 reflects the cultural refinement of the period. Inside, the church reveals an exceptional collection of stained‑glass windows, medieval stalls, and sacred artworks that highlight Liège’s deep artistic heritage. Its colourful ceiling, adorned with more than a hundred carved bosses, creates a uniquely vibrant atmosphere that distinguishes it from other churches in the region. Tucked slightly away from the busiest streets, Saint‑Jacques remains a serene and inspiring sanctuary, celebrated as one of Belgium’s most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings.
