Loncin Fortress stands as one of Liège’s most powerful memorials to the First World War, preserved in the dramatic state in which it fell on 15 August 1914. Built in the late 19th century as part of the fortified ring defending the city, the concrete stronghold was designed to resist heavy artillery but proved vulnerable to the unprecedented force of the German “Big Bertha” guns. A direct hit ignited the fort’s powder magazine, causing a catastrophic explosion that killed most of the garrison and left the structure shattered. Today, the ruins remain largely untouched, forming both a national necropolis and a place of remembrance where visitors can walk among collapsed walls, original armaments, and the resting place of hundreds of soldiers. The site offers a solemn, immersive insight into the Battle of Liège and the human cost of early modern warfare, making it one of the region’s most moving historic landmarks.
