Fort de Lantin

About

Fort de Lantin is one of the best‑preserved forts of the Liège defensive ring, offering a rare glimpse into late 19th‑century military engineering. Built between 1881 and 1884 under the direction of General Brialmont, it was constructed entirely of unreinforced concrete, a pioneering material at the time. Hidden in the countryside northwest of Liège, the fort played a significant role during the Battle of Liège in August 1914, when it resisted German bombardments before surrendering on the 15th. Unlike other forts, it was never modernised, leaving its corridors, casemates, and troop quarters almost exactly as they were during the First World War. Today, Fort de Lantin is open to visitors as a historical site and museum, offering immersive tours that recreate the daily life of soldiers stationed there. Its exceptional state of preservation makes it a powerful place of memory and an important witness to Belgium’s early wartime history.
