Fort Flémalle

Fort Flémalle
About

Fort Flémalle is one of the most imposing strongholds of the Liège fortified belt, built in the late 19th century as part of General Brialmont’s defensive network. Constructed entirely of unreinforced concrete between 1881 and 1884, it was designed to protect the Meuse valley and delay any enemy advance toward the city. Its massive quadrangular layout made it a formidable structure, yet it faced intense bombardment during the Battle of Liège in 1914 and again at the start of the Second World War. The scars of these assaults remain visible on its exterior, offering a powerful sense of the violence it endured. Today, Fort Flémalle is open to visitors, who can explore underground galleries, artillery positions, and museum spaces that recreate the daily life of soldiers across both world wars. Blending raw historical atmosphere with educational interpretation, it stands as a moving testament to the region’s military past and the resilience of those who defended it.
