The Interallied Memorial of Cointe rises above Liège as one of Belgium’s most powerful tributes to the Allied nations of the First World War. Conceived in the 1920s and inaugurated in 1937, the complex unites a soaring Art Deco tower with the Neo‑Byzantine Sacré‑Cœur church, creating a rare blend of civic and religious remembrance. Chosen because Liège was the first Belgian city to resist the German invasion in 1914, the site honours both the international alliance and the local defenders who endured the conflict’s earliest and most devastating blows.Standing 75 metres high on Cointe Hill, the memorial dominates the skyline and offers a solemn space for reflection, its esplanade overlooking the Meuse and the city it commemorates.
