Fort de la Chartreuse rises above the Amercœur district as one of Liège’s most atmospheric historic sites, a vast 19th‑century fortress slowly reclaimed by nature. Built between 1817 and 1823 on the former grounds of a Carthusian monastery, it was designed by the Dutch to defend the Meuse valley before Belgium became an independent nation. Over the decades, the fort served multiple roles: a military stronghold, a barracks, and later a prison during the First World War, where Belgian patriots were detained. Abandoned in the late 20th century, the complex has since transformed into a haunting blend of crumbling masonry, graffiti‑covered corridors, and dense vegetation. Today, its 20‑hectare grounds form an unofficial urban park, attracting walkers, photographers, and explorers drawn to its eerie beauty and layered history. Despite its decay, the fort remains a powerful reminder of Liège’s strategic past and the passage of time.
