The Collegiate Church of Saint Bartholomew is one of Liège’s most remarkable Romanesque monuments, instantly recognisable by its twin towers and striking polychrome façades. Founded in the early 11th century just outside the medieval city walls, it was built in the Rheno‑Mosan style using greywacke stone, giving the structure its distinctive, fortress‑like presence. Most of the church dates from the late 11th and 12th centuries, though later centuries added Baroque furnishings and a neoclassical portal that subtly blend with the original architecture. Inside, the church preserves one of Belgium’s greatest artistic treasures: the famous baptismal font attributed to Renier de Huy, celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and symbolic bronze reliefs. The interior’s serene atmosphere, enriched by centuries of artistic layers, makes the church both a spiritual sanctuary and a key witness to Liège’s medieval heritage. Today, it remains a beautifully restored landmark that connects the city to its earliest religious traditions.
Liège Belgium
The Collegiate Church of Saint Bartholomew (Collégiale Saint‑Barthélemy) is located in the heart of Liège at Place Saint‑Barthélemy, 4000 Liège, a short walk from the Meuse riverfront and the main shopping streets. The church stands on a lively square within the city’s historic core, just steps from the Crève‑Cœur area, the Curtius Museum and the former Curtius Palace, as well as the various historic houses and courtyards around Rue de la Hure and Place des Déportés. Nearby, visitors will also find the Musée des Beaux‑Arts de Liège, the administrative centre of the city and a number of riverside promenades, making Saint Bartholomew’s a central landmark for exploring Liège’s religious and cultural heritage on foot.
