Collegiate Church of Saint Bartholomew

Collegiate Church of Saint Bartholomew
About

The Collegiate Church of Saint Bartholomew is one of Liège’s most remarkable Romanesque monuments, instantly recognisable by its twin towers and striking polychrome façades. Founded in the early 11th century just outside the medieval city walls, it was built in the Rheno‑Mosan style using greywacke stone, giving the structure its distinctive, fortress‑like presence. Most of the church dates from the late 11th and 12th centuries, though later centuries added Baroque furnishings and a neoclassical portal that subtly blend with the original architecture. Inside, the church preserves one of Belgium’s greatest artistic treasures: the famous baptismal font attributed to Renier de Huy, celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and symbolic bronze reliefs. The interior’s serene atmosphere, enriched by centuries of artistic layers, makes the church both a spiritual sanctuary and a key witness to Liège’s medieval heritage. Today, it remains a beautifully restored landmark that connects the city to its earliest religious traditions.
