Collegiate Church of Saint John the Evangelist

About

The Collegiate Church of Saint John the Evangelist is one of Liège’s oldest religious foundations, established around 980 by Bishop Notger and consecrated in 987. Originally inspired by the Palatine Chapel in Aachen, the church followed an octagonal plan that set it apart from other Romanesque buildings in the region. Over the centuries, it evolved through reconstruction and stylistic changes, including major works in the 18th century that introduced neoclassical elements while preserving its distinctive layout. The church once housed the tomb of Notger and served as a prominent collegiate institution until its suppression during the French Revolution, after which the building was sold and repurposed. Today, it remains a serene and historically rich landmark, known for its cloister, medieval artworks, and calm interior that reflects more than a thousand years of Liège’s spiritual and architectural heritage.
