Château de Colonster stands on a rocky spur in the Ourthe valley, offering one of Liège’s most elegant historic settings. First mentioned in the 14th century, it was transformed in the 18th century by Maximilien‑Henri de Horion, who redesigned the former stronghold into a refined pleasure residence with richly decorated interiors. Over the centuries, the estate welcomed influential figures of Liège, including princes‑bishops and prominent civic leaders. In the 1960s, the property was acquired by the University of Liège, which restored the château and its surrounding park, preserving its architectural character while adapting it for contemporary use. Today, the château serves as a prestigious venue for receptions, seminars, and cultural events, surrounded by serene woodland and landscaped gardens. Its blend of aristocratic heritage and academic life makes it a distinctive landmark within the Sart‑Tilman domain.

It sits within the university’s wooded estate, a short drive from the E25 motorway and easily accessible via the Embourg exit, surrounded by research buildings and parkland. Nearby, visitors will find the main university campus structures, the Marcourt Library, various research institutes, and the wooded green spaces of the Sart Tilman estate, while the historic core of Liège with attractions such as the Meuse riverfront and the Citadel is reachable within a short drive or bus ride.
