The Collegiate Church of Saint Denis is one of Liège’s oldest and most atmospheric religious landmarks, founded in 987 under Bishop Notger and built directly into the medieval city walls. Its robust Romanesque architecture, including the nave completed in 1011, reflects its original defensive purpose, with the massive tower serving as an observation point overlooking the city. Over time, the church evolved stylistically: the choir was rebuilt in the 15th century in Gothic style, while the interior later gained Baroque decoration in the 18th century, creating a rich blend of artistic layers. Despite the suppression of the collegiate chapter during the French Revolution, the building survived and became a parish church in 1803. Today, Saint Denis stands as a beautifully preserved monument of exceptional Walloon heritage, offering visitors a rare journey through a millennium of Liège’s religious and architectural history.
