Its earliest surviving element is a sandstone wall from the original Romanesque structure, while the impressive West choir—built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries—blends Romano-Gothic forms with refined verticality. Inside, visitors encounter notable artworks, including The Invention of the Holy Cross by 17th‑century painter Bertholet Flémal. The church’s East apse dates to the 13th century, its naves to the 14th, and its side chapels to the 15th, creating a rare hall‑church layout where three naves rise to equal height. Once a major religious and civic focal point of the Holy Roman Empire, the church later endured periods of decline, yet its significance has been reaffirmed through heritage listings that recognize its exceptional cultural value.
