The Citadel of Liège crowns the city from the Sainte‑Walburge hill, a historic stronghold that has watched over the Meuse valley since the 13th century. First built in 1255, it evolved through centuries of conflict, reconstruction, and strategic adaptation, becoming the central fortification of Liège until the late 19th century. Its commanding position 111 metres above the river made it a key defensive site, later integrated into the network known as the Meuse Citadels. Although much of the original fortress has disappeared, the area has been transformed into a vast green space where remnants of walls and earthworks blend with panoramic walking paths. Today, the site is home to the CHR Citadelle hospital, yet large sections remain open to the public, offering sweeping views and a peaceful escape from the urban centre. The Citadel stands as a layered testament to Liège’s military past and its ability to reinvent historic landscapes for modern life.

The Citadel of Liège (Citadelle de Liège) sits on the Mont Saint-Walburge hill in the Sainte‑Walburge district, overlooking the Meuse valley in the heart of the city, at around Boulevard du 12ème de Ligne, 4000 Liège. It is set within the large Parc de la Citadelle, a green expanse that offers panoramic views across Liège and is easily reached from the historic centre via the famous Montagne de Bueren staircase. Nearby attractions include the Montagne de Bueren, the Museum of Walloon Life, several churches such as Saint‑Antoine and Saint‑André, and the surrounding residential streets of Sainte‑Walburge, all within a short walk from the citadel’s park and ramparts.
