Saint Martin’s Basilica

About

Saint Martin’s Basilica rises prominently on Publémont hill, one of Liège’s most historic and symbolic religious sites. Originally founded in the 10th century as a Romanesque church, it later became the birthplace of the first celebration of Corpus Christi in 1246, a tradition that spread throughout the Catholic world. The medieval structure was replaced in the 16th century by the Gothic building that stands today, marked by its tall tower, spacious nave, and harmonious proportions. Over the centuries, the basilica served as one of Liège’s seven collegiate churches and remained a centre of religious life until the Liège Revolution. Its cultural significance continued into the 19th century, when composer Felix Mendelssohn created Lauda Sion for the 600th anniversary of Corpus Christi. Elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1886, Saint Martin’s remains a serene and architecturally rich landmark, blending centuries of spiritual tradition with the city’s evolving urban landscape.
