The Rynek Underground Museum reveals a hidden layer of Kraków’s history beneath the bustling Main Square, offering an immersive journey into the city’s medieval past. Built around the archaeological excavations discovered during the square’s renovation, the museum preserves streets, foundations, and artifacts exactly where they were found. Visitors walk along glass platforms suspended above ancient pathways, surrounded by interactive displays, holograms, and reconstructions that bring the daily life of medieval Kraków into focus. Trade routes, craftsmanship, markets, and urban development are all explored through objects uncovered after centuries underground. The atmospheric lighting and soundscapes create a sense of stepping back in time, while modern technology helps interpret the complex story of a city shaped by commerce and culture. The Rynek Underground Museum offers a rare chance to experience Kraków’s origins from beneath its most iconic square, making history feel immediate and alive.
Krakow PolandThe Rynek Underground Museum is located directly beneath Kraków’s Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) with its entrance at Rynek Główny 1, on the eastern side of the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) opposite St. Mary’s Basilica. It lies in the very heart of the Old Town, surrounded at ground level by major landmarks including the Cloth Hall itself, the Town Hall Tower, St. Mary’s Basilica, the Adam Mickiewicz Monument, the Church of St. Wojciech, and a dense ring of cafés, restaurants, and shops around the square. Within a few minutes’ walk you also reach the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków in Krzysztofory Palace, numerous historic townhouses and palaces lining the square, and side streets leading towards Wawel Castle and the rest of the Royal Route.
