St. Mary’s Basilica is one of Kraków’s most recognisable landmarks, rising above the Main Market Square with its two unequal towers and richly decorated Gothic façade. Founded in the 14th century, the church is renowned for its breathtaking wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, a masterpiece of late Gothic art that unfolds scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary with extraordinary detail and emotion. The basilica’s interior glows with vibrant polychrome murals and stained‑glass windows that fill the space with colour and light. Every hour, the haunting trumpet call known as the hejnał is played from the taller tower, a tradition that has become a symbol of the city. Blending architectural beauty, artistic brilliance, and living heritage, St. Mary’s Basilica remains an essential part of Kraków’s cultural and spiritual identity.
