Fort 31 “St. Benedict” is one of Kraków’s most atmospheric and enigmatic military relics, perched on Lasota Hill above the Podgórze district. Built in the mid‑19th century as part of the Austrian fortress ring, it is the only surviving example of a rare two‑storey artillery tower in Poland. Its circular brick structure, thick defensive walls, and narrow embrasures reveal its original purpose as a strategic stronghold guarding the southern approaches to the city. Although long decommissioned and not regularly open to the public, the fort has become a compelling landmark for history enthusiasts and urban explorers drawn to its rugged silhouette and dramatic setting. Surrounded by greenery and overlooking the Vistula River, Fort St. Benedict stands as a powerful reminder of Kraków’s military past and the layered stories embedded in its landscape.
