St. Mary's Church Gdansk

About

St. Mary’s Church in Gdańsk is one of the largest brick churches in the world and a defining landmark of the city’s skyline. Built over nearly 160 years and completed in the 16th century, it represents the height of Baltic Gothic architecture, with soaring walls, massive pillars, and a vast interior that can hold thousands of worshippers. Inside, the church houses an extraordinary collection of medieval and early modern art, including the famous astronomical clock crafted by Hans Düringer, richly carved altars, and expressive stone epitaphs that reflect the city’s mercantile past. Despite suffering heavy damage during the Second World War, St. Mary’s was meticulously rebuilt, symbolising Gdańsk’s resilience and dedication to preserving its heritage. Today, visitors can also climb the tower for panoramic views over the Old Town and the Motława River. The church remains both a place of worship and a cultural treasure, offering a profound encounter with the city’s history and craftsmanship.
