The Green Gate is one of Gdańsk’s most striking architectural monuments, forming a grand finale to the Royal Route as it opens onto the Motława River. Built in the 16th century as a residence for visiting monarchs, it reflects the influence of Dutch Mannerism, with its elegant gables, arched passageways, and richly ornamented façade. Although no king ever stayed here, the building quickly became an important civic landmark, linking the bustling Long Market with the waterfront and symbolising the city’s wealth and international connections. Over the centuries, the Green Gate has served various roles, from administrative offices to a cultural venue. Today, it houses exhibition spaces and offers beautiful views of the river and the historic Granary Island. With its refined architecture and prominent location, the Green Gate remains a defining feature of Gdańsk’s historic landscape and a favourite spot for visitors exploring the heart of the old city.
Gdansk Poland
The Green Gate (Brama Zielona) is located at Długi Targ 24 in the heart of Gdańsk’s Old Town, at the eastern end of Long Market where it meets the Motława River waterfront. Nearby you can reach Long Market, Neptune’s Fountain, the Main Town Hall, Artus Court, the Crane (Żuraw), the riverside promenade, and the Golden Gate, so it sits at the centre of the Royal Route and is easy to combine with a walk through the city’s historic streets and along the Motława embankment.
